10 Hair tips/ Hacks

  1. Annoying “flyaways” that constantly want to stand up and come out to play? Use a toothbrush (one that you don’t use to brush your teeth with) and spray it with hairspray, then brush your hair down and your “flyaways” should be tamed.
  2. When you’ve just washed your hair, use an old t-shirt to dry your hair instead of a towel. Towels can be a bit harsh especially if you have fine, brittle hair. T-shirts also absorb more of the water from your hair.
  3. When blow drying your hair, ensure that you blow drying in the direction of the hair growth (downwards). This will ensure less split ends and breakage. Take note of professional’s blow drying techniques next time you go to the hair salon, and try to mimic their actions when you blow dry your hair. They too are trained to blow dry in the direction of the hair growth, and not in all directions which most of us are guilty of.
  4. An inexpensive, quality dry shampoo is from the brand Batiste. It comes in varies ranges to suit your hair colour. Sold at varies pharmacies.
  5. Waking up with static hair most mornings? Use dry sheets after brushing or styling your hair.
  6. When your hair is wet or damp, never ever use the same brush you use to brush or style your hair with, not even a regular comb. Instead, a wide tooth comb should be used. Your hair is very brittle and prone to breakage when wet and by using a wide tooth comb less breakage/ hair loss will occur.
  7. Do not tease your hair on a regular basis or daily. Teasing causes breakage. Rather opt for a volumising shampoo and conditioner or leave in products. However, if its that odd occasion where teasing is required, use an old toothbrush instead of a comb to tease your hair.
  8. If you know you going to be in the sun for an extended period of time, as much as using a sunscreen for your skin is required, your scalp/ head needs protection too. Use a scalp screen or scalp shield. Specially formulated to protect against sun damage. Or wear a sun hat or cap to protect your head. Continues sun exposure to the scalp can cause dry, itchiness and flaking.
  9. Do not wash your hair every single day! Your hair loses its natural oils and moisture content therefore becoming very dry, brittle and fine. Try to wash your hair every second day, or on average we should only be washing our hair every 3 days, 4 maximum.
  10. Want to achieve heatless waves and curls? Wash your hair, let it air dry, braid or plait it, go to bed and the next morning untie the braid or plait for effortless, heatless waves and curls.
